Visiting the City of Joy and my new year resolutions

Its been a week since i have been in Kolkata, a much needed rest i might add. Staying in Bangalore changes your perspective of life. I realized how fast the pulse of the life in Bangalore is after i have spent a few days here in Kolkata. Here, the life is much more easy paced and people go about dong things at a speed of their own. This gives the city a tranquility that you tend to enjoy, especially since it seems so newfound and a welcome change.

Having visited the city, i have been able to have a lot of time to myself to think about what i would like to do in the days to come. Come to think of it, its New Year's night tomorrow and i have made my list of new year resolutions for this year. True, I have not always been religiously regular with "all" my resolutions :) but well, i have completed some so i think i might not be too badly off with this year's ones. So, if you are reading this blog at this point in time and know me well enough to share a word or two, do remind me from time to time that i had blogged my new year resolutions and i should stand by them :D

Well, here they are in no particular order
1) I wont use credit cards this year- I have already worked on this. I had three CC's in '07 and now, i have paid off my debts on two and closed them both. That leaves me with one card and i am not going to use this at all unless i have to make a transaction which cannot be done other that with a CC. Trust me on this: Credit cards are the worst thing that happened to modern day society. True, they have opened a market in which u can shop without carrying too much money. It also helps making transactions online but but but, u never end up paying on time and the credit just keeps on increasing. I was a victim of this in 2007 and , quite embarrasingly, much to my own doing but i am now much wiser for it and trust me, you would be better off borrowing this resolution for yourself too :)

2) Win a table tennis tournament - This one is much harder but given the amount of time and effort i put into the game, i think i should atleast try and get close to this. I have been working hard at the game and it is a game that i enjoy tremendously thanks to the knowledge imparted to me by my coach, Mr G.K.Viswanath, a 4 time nationals champ and a true ambassador of the sport. Only time will tell and i know that ill be still putting in the effort required to make this happen.

3) Lose weight and get into shape - :D well, im not a fat arse but well, i would like to lose the extra flab and look a little more like the guy i used to be in college. Not that i am a narcissist, but being in IT, i have realized that being in shape is one of the most important things that you can gift yourself for time to come. A desk based job takes out all physical activity and it brings on a lot of pounds for people in this industry. A healthy body gives a healthy mind and i hope i can get started on this. i know that i do veer off the tangent at times but ill try my best this time round to get this done. I think i have kept it realistic this time round :D

Cheerz and a very happy '08 to all the people who have painstakingly reached the end of this blog entry !!! :)

Its been some time since i last updated my blogspot and i'm feeling very close to guilty right now :) But i do plan to be very near religious regularity with this space from now or so i hope :)

I have been watching this show on this new channel. The channel is NDTV Good Times and the name of the show is The Lounge. Hosted by Rajat Kapoor, this show gets people on the show and they talk about ,more often than not, life in the Indian Metro these days. The funny thing is that mostly it highlights problems in the Indian Society that have come to light as an aftermath of the golbalization that India has seen in the past so many years. And honestly, most of all the issues discussed are true things happening right there in front of us. Couples cheating on each other, people shying away from marriage worried about losing their freedom, the works... it is strange how suddenly a show highlights everything that has been staring in my face for the past so many months. I have seen so many people fight, break up, cheat and it makes me wonder what the indian suburbia is coming to... what has changed so much from the times that our parents lived in that has taken such a drastic toll on the lives of youngsters these days??

The money is there but are we in some way losing our sanity? I fight with my 24 yr old brother all the time since he is linked to the internet all the time he is home. I am a big advocate that youngsters should play outdoor games and not stick to just the playstation( true i love the PS myself but hey, i clock 9 hours of hard training on weekends for Table tennis from a coach). Our nation is turning into a fledgling population of couch potatoes who just love virtual reality so much that they fail to see the sunlight outside their windows.... comments anyone???

Buying the dishTV

Yes... i admit it !!! I am an electronics freak. I cant help it.. I just love stuff and buying it seems the only way out :p That has led me to buy a PS2, a 29" Wega, a Sony Home Theater and now finally, a dishTV .
This decision was more of a necessity though.. Cable in Bangalore isnt great due to the fact that operators have divisions specified and one region can have only one cable operator. So that means there is no competition and hence, service is bad.

So i thought i wouldnt take their crap anymore and so bought the dish yesterday. The reception is awesome. There is a a new player in the market though ..TataSky ...so you can soon expect some competition to DishTV in the near future... But TataSky still hasd only 57 channels compared to DishTV's 140 ,so it still has some time to go.

But if you guys are looking for HD broadcasts , bad news guys.... Channels have not started broadcasts in HD yet and it wont be here for another good tweo years..so if you r thinking of buying that HD TV, keep that money in your pockets coz it wont be happening for some time :)

During the early years, I used to think : Damn, if i get 20000 bucks per month as salary , id be the happiest guy in the world. Life wont be a problem anymore..ill have money to take my girlfriend out, heck..ill even think of buying a car...

Well, i have all that now and more.. but damn, why the hell am i not happy? Work for everyone is great. Im working for a Fortune 10 company and i can see the pride in my dad's eyes...but i aint happy..rather , i aint satisfied.. someday i think i might leave it all and move on to new quarters...

Just got an offer from an H1B Sponsor ..do i now go to the US next year?? Well, i dont know..last time i visited the US (that was last year), i liked the place ..but then , that was Denver and thats in the mountains ... wonderful place....

Decisions decisions decisions....

Well, im taking one now ..here stop the typing :) !!!!

All in A Day's Work
I was sort of hoping that some sort of spice would be added to my life here in Bangalore. The wasy it happened today was both unexpected and undesirable. It all started with Bidan, my best buddy wanting to buy a bed for his new home. I was all enthusiastic about the whole thing. So down we went to Infantry Road and parked my car. It took us like an hour to finish and we decided to get the tempo we hired to first come to my place by following me in my car , pciking up some of Bidan's stuff from my house, coming back to the shop and picking up the bed too and finally delivering it..... PHEW!!!!
So imagine my incredulity when i reached the place I had parked my car and found that it WASNT THERE !!! I was shocked ...damn my car was new and i loved it... the shopkeeper nearby told me that the police had towed the car away coz it was a NO PARKING... Bangalore is shitty ..there wasnt even a No Parking sign there.... so down i went to the station and it took me a good one hour to get the car out of the pound leaving me 400 rupees poorer.... Spice can be unexpected sometimes.... Like they say...u better know what u r wishing for coz sometimes, it just might come true :)

Once upon a time in Bangalore
It is now three months and counting since i step foot in Bangalore. Not that i didnt visit Bangalore before..i did but those stays were for a max of a week at a time. And i realize now that things tend to lose their sweetness over time. I wish i had something nice to say about the city other than the lovely weather but i find myself at a loss for words.
I think it is probably the Chandigarh blues that reign my thought patterns currently. Chandigarh was a lovely city to say the least . Lovely people, roads, sanity all over... the roads and the traffic in bangalore is really bad..reminds me of new york and that isnt nice, is it????
On a better note though, i now have friends here with me in Bangalore so its not too bad. I now think i will try and look at the positives :) I guess the picture of life is how you pain it : it can be as good or as bad as you want it to be :)
Will keep everyone updated and will write more on my blog

About me

  • I'm Dhiman Lahiri
  • From Bangalore, Karnataka, India
  • This is a tricky question to answer as I’m not always entirely sure who I am from one moment to the next. In fact, all I'm certain of is that I'm not quite the same person as I was when I first arrived in Bangalore 2 years ago. How I think of myself: * Decent * Opinionated * Honest How my friends think of me: * Stubborn (in a good way) * Opinionated * Obsessed with my hair/clothes * Spendthrift :) How I really am: * Loyal * dedicated * borderline obsessive (and not just about my clothes) My social views are conservative, my politics are moderate... i think thats about it!!!
